Mammoth Cache

Located in a little meadow besides a stream.

This cache is in a 1/2 gallon thermos that is inside a camouflage cloth (got this idea from Tigger2's "The Old Tired Swingers cache"). It is near the Mammoth Museum which is open everyday from May 25th-September 30th from 10:30AM to 6:00PM. The nearby park and bike path/cross country skiing path is the place to park, a footbridge will let you cross the river without wading through. In the winter I guess you can just walk across the frozen river. The original cache contents were:

Letter opener
Matchbox SUV
Mini yo-yo
Pressed penny
Poncho
Kaleidescope
Turbo knife
Sleeve of golf balls
Stress truck (like a stress ball-but it's a truck)
Toy compass
Glow in the dark superball
2 AA batteries
Wooden 3D rabbit puzzle

HINT:

Next to a fallen tree that points east to the museum and west to the footbridge.

Loki Cache 4

This is the fourth Loki Cache. The first three are in the LA area. Expect more along 395, to make the drive from LA to Mammoth a little more interesting. To get you in the right area, 395 to the Green Church, 1.1 miles down on your left, you will find a dirt road....take it. Follow your GPS to some rocks........ha ha ha , the whole place is filled with rocks.
The cache is a Tupperwear container (green Lid) Inside is:
2 Music Cd's (one new)
3 Chem Lights
2 Olivia Trading cards
1 Porche 930 Hot wheel car
1 cadi emblem
and of course a note book to write your thoughts and dreams.

HINT:

It's at ground level, in a little cave, behind a few rocks. You can still see it.

Frogstar West

Located on a side road that connects to the main road near the entrance to Lundy Canyon. Some local's will know where it is just from the title. Fossil Lady knew where. I met her in Bodie after hiding the cache. Nice lady. BEWARE: This place is frequented by fishermen and campers alike. Other times it is completely deserted. Muggle proof your search please. Pass bye and then return after checking the area out.

The FrogStar is considered to be the most evil place in the Galaxy according to The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

A galactic travel agency marketed FrogStar West to an amphibian race by boasting that it was a paradise for frogs and, after securing their fares and expenses, promptly declared bankruptcy, thus stranding the creatures there.

THIS CACHE IS FULL OF FROGS!!! Help them into other caches in the Long Valley, or keep them on your dashboard for good luck. If you ever meet MtnFrog in Mammoth, show her your frog.

TRY to keep the frog theme going, but it's not absolutely necessary.

Contents:

FTF Medal.
Logbook, pen & pencil.
Trolling for Keychains TB
9Key's Book Crossing Book. Title: Life's Little Instruction Book
& a ****load of frogs.

HINT:

BIG FROG about .02 away.

Lunchbox Cache

Don't let the terrain rating deter you. I only used a 2 because there is some slight rock hopping and/or scrambling required. There are several hard packed dirt roads easily accessible to anything with decent clearance.

Cache is a black plastic lunchbox.

When it was first hidden it contained:
Logbook & Pen
Hamburglar (McDonalds Figure)
Plastic Fox figure
Coca Cola Hotwheel
Death Valley Patch
Sack of Marbles
Finger Watch (ring)
Mardi Gras Beads
Bishop VFD Keychain
2 bookmarks
All items are in a ziplock baggie as this lunchbox is not watertight. If you put an item in the cache that you dont want to get wet, put it in the ziplock.

The views from this location are pretty nice. Bring a lunch and stay awhile! I hope everyone enjoys the cache.

Panorama Dome

The cache can be found on Panarama Dome. From the top there's a excellent view of the whole Mammoth area. Park off the side of the road at Lake Mary Road. You'll see a sign for the trailhead. It's a pretty short, but all uphill hike. Bring a lunch, the view is worth staying for awhile.

About a hundred yards of cross country travel is required. Long pants might be a good idea. Besides it gets very windy up there.

The cache is a fairly large tupperware and when placed contained:

Water bomb
disco ball yo-yo
Garth Brooks CD
Walt Disney World soap bar-yeah we stole it haha
mini pliers
Spanish/English dictionary
squeeze bug light keychain
one time use camera
$1 in change

Please take a picture of yourself with the camera. Whoever takes the last picture please mail the camera to me with the $1 in change and I'll post the pictures online.

***NOTE*** I'm on my way up to visit the cache this weekend (Labor Day) I'll be putting the developed pictures in it as well as rechecking the coordinates with my Vista. (I had a much older model garmin when I set the cache and had a heck of a time getting it to settle down to get a reading up there)

HINT:

From the top of the hill it's at the base of the forked tree that can be seen looking towards Mammoth Lakes. Troy would like it if the next person there can put some rocks around it to keep it from being washed away during the spring melt.

Mammoth Rock Mine

A short but steep hike up to sweeping vistas and an old mine

We found this area while hiking up towards the top of Mammoth Rock with our friends Penny and Russell. The trailhead starts at N 37° 37.076' W 118° 59.693'. On the way up check out the portable stamp mill along the way. The cache site offers awesome views of Mammoth Mountain. Panorama Dome, Mammoth Rock and the town of Mammoth.
If you're up to it, check out the near by mine and the cool crystals forming on the ceiling. Enter the mine at your own risk! Mammoth is a volcanic area and subject to earthquakes, and mines have been known to cave in.

Hope you enjoy the hike and view as much as we did.

The cache is hidden under a ledge of a flat two foot by three foot rock.

Ballpoints Cache

The cache is located about 50 yards from Laurel Lakes (4WD) Road just before the gate that leads to the Lakes Campground. This is a high clearance road, so 4WD, SUV, 4 Wheeler, Dirt Bike, or Hike ONLY! Awesome views! This one wouldn't be a bad hike. Take water, and/or a water filter, for the creek beyond the cache.

Do you ever wonder why you can never find a pen when you really need one? It's as if they just disappear on their own!

Have you ever been stricken with guilt when you have opened up your checkbook, or checked your pocket, only to find that pen that you borrowed to make your last purchase or to scrawl a quick note?

These occurrences are now known to have a deeper meaning....

Scientists have just recently discovered that borrowed pens are capable of exercising a mild form of temporary mind control!

This concept becomes more acceptable when you begin to realize that borrowed pens are also aware that geocachers can help them realize their greatest dream.....

Geocachers, your borrowed pens are trying to tell you that they want to go to VEET VOOJAGIG'S BALLPOINT PLANET, (or the nearest wormhole to VVBP*) but because of the lack of Babel Fish** here on Earth, their cries for help are only interpreted as so many clicks and scratches.

DON'T PANIC!

Here at VVBP we offer a variety of solutions to your ballpointoid dilemma. You can choose from the following solutions, or create a solution of your own:

#1 Set your borrowed pens free to live out their lives among members of their own kind; absolving yourself of your perceived sin, you can leave with a clear conscience; smug in the knowledge that you have acted in the pen's best interests.

#2 Conduct a ballpoint prisoner exchange. (A certain amount of pen laundering is expected and encourage here at VVBP.)

#3 Find that pesky pen that has escaped your clutches and drag it back, clicking and scritching, to a life of servitude. Since you most likely are not in possession of a Babel Fish**, you can't be offended by its ballpointoid curses and swears. (A word to the wise if you choose this option: Get a pocket protector!)

This cache is dedicated to the memory of the late, great, author: Douglas Adams, whose novel, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," is the inspiration for this cache and several more to come.

Here's what "The Guide" has to say about VVBP:

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a very unevenly edited book and contains many passages that simply seemed to it's editors as a good idea at the time.

One of these supposedly relates to the experiences of one Veet Voojagig, a quiet young student at the University of Maximegalon who became increasingly obsessed with the problem of what had happened to all the ballpoints he'd bought over the past few years.

There followed a long period of painstaking research during which he visited all the major centers of ballpoint loss throughout the Galaxy and eventually came up with a quaint little theory that quite caught the public imagination at the time. Somewhere in the cosmos, he said, among all the other (inhabited) planets, there was a planet entirely given over to ballpoint life forms. And it was to this planet that unattended ballpoints would make their way, slipping away quietly through wormholes in space to a world where they could enjoy a uniquely ballpointoid life-style, responding to highly ballpoint-oriented stimuli, and generally leading the ballpoint equivalent of a good life." - abridged excerpt from "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams

Footnotes:

*Anyone who wishes to create a wormhole cache to VVBP using my text as a reference; please do! That would tickle me to death. My family will be maintaining one, or two, on the west coast. Make sure you give Douglas Adams the credit.

**If you are not a fan of THGTTG and don't wish to check out a copy of the book; see my TB page - The Miraculous Babel Fish for details.

Finally; if you just want to leave a note on this page in tribute to Douglas Adams; I would be happy to know that someone else in this world misses his work as much as I do.

Hardcore Sunrise

Near the top of Hardcore at 10,113 feet above sea level. It's .17 from another of my Adventure Caches. Park to the side of the road and tread lightly. DO NOT DRIVE, RIDE, OR TAKE A HORSE TO THIS LOCATION! AS SOON AS YOU GET AN INDICATION TO LEAVE THE ROAD. PARK IT AND WALK...Lightly please. Respect this place.

I am sharing this special spot of mine with geocachers because as a subset of humanity, I think that most geocachers are above par. I have never met a geocacher in person that I didn't like.

I have had a cache of sorts at this location since 1998. No one has ever found it. It's gone now. I replaced it with a log only micro that contains Dinky Bug. A very cool micro-cache TB. I promised its owner this cache months ago.

Why a micro so close to my other cache? Use this location as the title suggests and post the pictures here. You will be amazed at what you will see. Especially if there are any fires in the area. Even the worst photographer can take an award winning picture here at sunrise or sunset.

Please post your shots and enjoy. Spend some time there. You won't regret it. MAGNIFICENT SOLITUDE!

Jailbird Cache

Have been coming up to this area for many years. Still enjoy it's pristine beauty. Thought this area needed a fairly easy cache. The cache is in a large 3" diameter waterbottle.
There is no bushwacking or off trail adventures involved. Please enjoy the area placed and it's many opportunities. This cache should also be accessible with snow cover.
This cache can be accessed from several locations. Choose your own hike. If you need clues look at the cheat.
Have fun and enjoy the contents of the cache!

NOTE: Due to the recent information logged by fellow geocachers, I thought it would be a good idea to add that...It is possible that you may encounter "swampy" areas on the way to this cache.
Usually "swampy" conditions are caused by rain and snow melt. If any of these events have occured recently, you may encounter the imfamous "swampy" areas. There are ways to get to this cache without going through these areas. Please find this cache at your own descretion.

Not going to make it too easy, it is up to you to decipher the clues... #36 - bridge - meadow - 2 trees - small branches

Mill-a-Ped Cache

The hike is about 1/4 mile fairly level with a few mild climbs. You do need to cross one small stream (plenty of foot-sized rocks!) Beware of loose rocks near the cache itsself.

The cache is a fairly large tupperware container with a blue lid. It initially contains:
a Geocache.com letter in all languages
A logbook
4 Multi-Color Pens
a Pocket Oriental Fan
a Granola Bar
a Camera
Sudafed and PainAid Travel Packets
A set of Stereo earphones (bud style with case)
kozmo.com carry card
4 Rexx Business cards
and 4 quarters.
Please take a picture of yourself with the camera and replace. (Whoever takes the last picture please take the quarters and mail to me at address in logbook and I will post online!)

Please take my business cards and place in another cache... I'd like to see them show up when I find a cache! (How is that for a novel idea!)

We heard a wood-pecker and saw a deer during this hike.

HINT:

The cache is under the back edge of a large rock which has a "folded over" tree standing over it several yards from the remains of the historic Mill City Stamp Mill Water Wheel.

Gardisky Gold

At Gardisky Lake, 2 hour hike round trip, up 750 foot elevation change Stash is at 10,480 ft elevation. BYOO (Bring your own oxygen)

Went camping with my two boys and wanted to look for a stash. Didn't find too many in this area so we decided to place one ourselves.
We placed this stash in a tin can with a Zip Lock bag inside. We left a sleeve of Rapscallion Golf Balls, two packs of Porsche Golf Tees, O.J. Simpson All Pro Football Card, Pedro Feliz S.F.Giants Baseball Card, UNR Wolf Pack pouch and a camera. Take your picture when you get there but leave the camera. I plan to retrieve it and develop the pictures to post on the web site.

As you get to the top you come to a body of water that you think is the lake. Keep going and you will see the larger body of water which is the main lake.

HINT:

The stash is in a black tin with flowers on it. Stash is on the right side/east side of the lake. It is under a large uprooted tree stump.

Fishful Thinkin'

Start @ Tom's place..pretty much level at approx 7000 feet. Great fishing in the summer and snowshoeing and crosscountry sking in the winter at nearby Rock Creek.

Its in a clear tupperware container with a white lid. Contents as follows: 6pk of fish hooks, copper braclet, kazoo, yellow parachute guy, Mark Davidson CD (local artist-very good), Tom's Place pamplet, wooden fish (get it-fishfull thinking), Felix the cat zipper pull, 3 band-aids, pack of matches, Windbreaker (a toy), extra pencil (please bring more if u happen to have one), JeweleAire card (great place), and a Ruby tennis ball for other dogs to play with if they want. Was going to put a bottle of water in, but it would certainly freeze over the winter. The colors are beautiful around there right now, but temps are getting way low in the night. Happy caching!! Okay folks!!! I checked the cache on Tuesday April28th. Its still there in the exact same spot. People have found it previously..keep looking. Its there..honest!

Hi fellow geocachers! New things added to cache...2 lures (which are already gone), 4 beer tokens for Tom's Place (let them know where you got them), and last Saturday (Preakness Day), left a lighted yo yo and another fishing lure. Keep looking folks...more will be added during the summer. Happy fishing! Careful crossing the road after the corrigated tunnel.

HINT:

Be careful of the street on the other side of the corrigated walk-thru (especially if you have dogs or kids). Look for a beautiful tripod juniper tree.

Minaret Summit

Bring your camera because this is worth the view

This was a rather interesting vacation for us. We didn't expect rain or snow at all in the sierras and were rather supprised to wake up to a cloudy sky and rain. I reccomend a camera for this spot, it is really worth it.

The cache is totally out of view and might be a little off of the coordinates because the trees were bouncing my signal around a little. The cache is in an ammo box that should be generally easy once you get to the area. There is an actual path most of the way, but you have to go a little off the path to get to the cache. Don't worry, you have a GPS so you wont get lost.

When placed the cache contained:

GeoNote and log
Cache GeoCamera
PHS Pencil
Orange pencil
Keychain flashlight
Hole puncher
Pack of 50 push pins
Mono Lake keychain
Fred Flintstone bug
Please take your picture or a picture of something you find interesting in the area with the cache geocamera and leave it in the cache. If the camera is full please e-mail me and let me know so I can come and get it.

HINT:

I picked the name Fallen for a reason. Do you know why?

Panum Panorama

This ammo box cache is perfect for Eastern Sierran hikers and skiers - should be snow-free most of the year.

The original P.P. cache coordinates were a bit off and the clue misleading - sorry - i was in my geocaching infancy back then! So I've re-checked the coords and while the cache is in the same place, this new description should enable you to find it. From Highway 395, take Highway 120 about 3 miles and turn left onto dirt Crater Rd. Park in the lot at the end of the road. See clue for rest of description.

From the cache site, you have a great 360 view of the Sierras and especially beautiful Mono Lake. Cache is about .33 mi from parking lot. I added several more items 6/29/02; it has a log book and pen.

HINT:

From parking lot, take trail uphill to the first junction and go left to the plug (not the rim). The trail is very rocky. Keep left at unmarked junctions as you approach a ridge to the north with several single jeffrey pine trees. Near the top of the ridge, there is one medium size tree - about 25' with a smaller tree nearby. The cache is fairly close to that tree and slightly uphill of the path closest to the top of the ridge. Look in a crevice in a pile of rocks.

Pumice Field

This cache is dedicated to Jessie and her dog Ruby who we met while in Mammoth Lakes.
We were on vacation from Coronado (San Diego) CA, and this cache is 361 miles away from us. We went on vacation with the idea of "planting" a cache in an area that we thought was interesting to us and would be to others. Arriving in Mammoth, we decided to hide the cache on a trail used by offroaders, snowmobilers and mountain bikers. It can be found in fair weather and foul weather conditions (if you like to dig in the snow). If found by winter explorers, we will be duly impressed! Inside the cache are, e.g., hat, beer/water coolers, a keychain with a bottle opener, plastic (camping?) shot glass, a book on tape, etc. Leave something fun. It may save a life, who knows. Good luck and let us know if you find it.

Reverse Peak Tarns

Plan on a few hours for this lovely loop hike w/a car shuttle - the trail is not well traveled or marked. Trailheads are not marked. That's why we like it! The tarns (large ponds) should have water all summer. Site is not accessible in winter except on skis/snowshoes (a long haul). Cache is a cookie tin wrapped in a trash bag for weather protection.

Advise a car shuttle. From Highway 168 west of the town of June Lake, directly across from the June Mtn Ski area, take North Shore Drive .3 mile to a dirt road on your left (37 46.838 / 119 05.337). Park one car there. Continue on .2 mile and park the second car near the baseball field (37 46.502, 119 05.555). Walk east on North Shore Drive, up the road, looking for a narrow dirt road on the left side of the paved road (37 46.983, 119 05.180) that ascends from the paved road. Start hiking on that road. In a few hundred yards, it narrows to a trail and turns left (north) going up a canyon, between two low ridges. You may see Forest Service signs along the trail. You climb fairly steeply and reach a sagebrush flat, and you will see the tarns at the end of the flat, below you. Explore the tarns and return to the trail. Continue on the trail to a ridge overlooking June Lake; the trail descends steeply to where you left your first car. Probably about 3-4 miles and a good workout in a beautiful, seldom-visited area!

HINT:

Look for a huge juniper tree just off the trail

Who's at Fault

The cache is in an ammo box at an elevation of 7800 feet. It is near the road, but do wear your hiking shoes. The road will close during the winter so enjoy this cache while you can.

The cache is on a lateral moraine. This just a fancy name for a large pile of glacial debris. This rocky debris was left along both sides of McGee Creek canyon by glaciers which have come down the canyon in the past. Since placment of the of the glacial till, the Sierra Range has continued to grow higher. This upward movment has taken place along faults where the earth's crust has fractured. This is one of those locations known a the Hilton Creek Fault.

After finding the cache go back down to the campground, and look back up to the cache location. From here it is rather easy to see the fifty foot high fault scarp, The scarp runs to the west side of the campground, and beyond. This fault scarp can be identified for qiite a distance both north and south of this location. The scarp is an indicator of the displacment which has taken place across the lateral moraine during recent geological time.

Sometimes the displacment along Eastern Sierra faults have occured rapidly, generating great earthquakes. For example, ninety miles south of here, in 1872, the fault along the eastern side of the Sierra Range fractured producing an earthquake judged to be in excess of 8.0 on the Richter scale. More recently, in 1980 the fault which you are looking at produced an earthquake having a magnitude of 6.0, or better. Are you sure you want to stick around for the next one?

The cache contains a logbook, pencils, and a Geocaching Site Notice. The origional contentents are:

* Miniature Delft china pieces.
* Granola bar.
* Tin of Ice Breakers
* PEZ dispenser, and candy.
* Baseball CD.
* Tote bag.
* Assorted polished rocks.
* Turquoise sampler
* Kitchen Timer.
* Adventure picnic set.
* Fishing kit.
* Ball cap.

If you have found a small Beaver Tail Cactus at these coordinates, you are really close.

Creag an Tuirc II

Terrain difficulty, your choice. Fun way is Difficulty 4 – Class III climbing; or Difficulty 3 – rock scramble/trudge up the talus.
General difficulty 2.5 - Go to the top. Where would YOU hide a coin?

We climbed an unnamed crag below Blue Crag with the intention of hiding our first geocache. We discovered a log left by Tricia and Phil on July 7, 1991. They put some work into it. There is a wooden plaque. Attached with a chain is a plastic box embossed CREAG AN TUIRC II. The log inside explains how they named this after Boars Rock in Scotland. There is only about three entries in the log. It is deteriorating, and someone left a new log book.
Looking for a place to hide our geocache, I chanced upon a 1964 Roosevelt dime hidden in a crack. Changed my mind about the geocache. Took the dime and left an old peso. (I was going to leave a 1908 10-cent piece, but I dropped and lost it in the dirt, ON the trail, at Emerald Lake - bonus points if you find it!) Made a note in Tricia’s & Phil’s log.

I don’t think the peso will be hard to find. It is at the first place I looked. If you cannot find it, log your visit and email me. We will send a photo Debi took of me hiding it, down-grading the stash as General Difficulty 1.

Bring an interesting coin (Krugerrands are nice). And don’t forgot bug repellant if you are near the lakes and meadows!!

HINT:

You can climb CREAG AN TUIRC II from any direction. We made a loop. Started at Emerald Lake Trailhead; through Gentian and Sky Meadows; ascended the saddle south of the crag; climbed north to the top; descended east to Duck Pass Trail, at Skelton Lake, to take us back to the car.

Note: If you click on the “Topo Zone” link below, it will mark a spot about 90 meters west of where the booty actually is. At the top left of the Topozone.com screen, click on “UTM coords” under “Get a Map.” Input 11 0325126 4160219 and click “Map It” to get an accurate map.

Tiki Torch Falls

The trail to the South end of Convict Lake is easy, but after that it is cross country to the cache, which is located near a series of falls (and now named Tiki Torch Falls). Although there is some bushwacking, the trek is generally open and accessible.

This cache is located at Convict Lake in the general vacinity of the "Prison Pond" cache, which we were unable to locate. This is an absolutely beautiful area and the falls are breathtaking. We named the place Tiki Torch Falls, partly for selfish personal reasons, but also because this falls are visible all the way from the other side of the lake. The trip is not too strenuous, but requires hiking without a trail once you leave the Convict Lake loop trail. The cache is on the west side of the falls, but if you find yourself on the east side hunt around, there are a few makeshift bridges you can cross. Cache is in a rectangular tubberware-like container. Contents include: A 50 Drachma Greek banknote, 2 bottles of water, A wooden flute, a small football, 1 new deck of cards, a fishing fly, 2 AA batteries, a fishing lure, 5 pieces of bubblegum, a Garlic Festival cookbook, ...and the log book. Good luck and happy caching!

Keep in mind the cache contains fishing flies. Included are five flies, hand tied by yours truly, a log book, and a very small pencil. All of which were stuffed into the container. As a side note I used another of these flies later in the day to catch a 5-6 pound rainbow trout out of this lake.

Play Ball in Lee Vining

This was just to make sure Lee Vining California wouldn't go without being noticed.

I realized most of the caches in this area are either virtual or standard sized caches so I decided to place a micro for you. I don't know how many of the Central Valley Cachers will be up here, but if there were this would probably rate a 1. For those of you who haven't cached in the central valley this is a 2. Snowslide 1911

A place of rest since 1911

In 1880, Bodie was surpassed in population by only one other city in the western US. Just over a decade later, it was one of the first US cities to receive electrical power generation from a remote hydroelectrical station. In 1911, one of the stations was located on Mill Creek near the mouth of Lundy Canyon. It was called Jordan.

During the winter night of March 7, 1911, avalanches swept down the mountain above Jordan. At the Lundy facility, one person died. At Mill Creek's Jordan facility, several people died, but one woman survived for 2 days to be discovered by crews from Bodie investigating their lights going out. The victims were buried at a ranch, one mile to the north.

The best account of this forgotten story is in High Sierra SUV Trails: East Side, by Roger Mitchell, and it can be found at the Mono Lake Visitor Center.

The cache is a 2# wide mouth candy container covered with camo tape, respectfully placed outside the perimeter. The 2 access routes are flat firm dirt tracks, perhaps unsuited to low clearance vehicles (YMMV): ~1.3 miles from the end of Mill Creek Power Road or 0.7 mile from Highway 395 from the east. For the later, the waypoint for the unmarked entrance is N38 03.287, W119 09.942; use caution in turning down the embankment from the high speed highway. In winter, snow will cover the ground at times, and snow travel equipment will be necessary.

End of the Rainbow

We decided to place our first cache here because the area is so beautiful. This location was one of many we considered but the view won our hearts over. Perfect place to enjoy a picnic lunch.
If you want to see where your going before hand, go to N 37° 36.087' W 119° 05.141' and look in the NW direction.

The Cache Contains:

Pittsburgh Steelers Playing Cards
1970's Greatest Hits Cassette
Red Tribute Bandana 9/11/01
Bird Book
First Aid Pocket Guide
Dolphin and Mount Whitney Pictures
R.E.I. Biner
Hard Rock Cafe Stir Stick
Disposable Camera
Goody Bag - Filled with Misc. Stuff
Multi-Colored Ball
Yosemite Map
Log Book with Pen and Pencil

HINT:

The Devils Postpile National Monument Ranger Station is a good start. You will need to cross the river below the falls. Hike mid-way up a small hill and then look for a flat, white rock that comes to a v-shaped point on one end. When facing away from the falls and looking at this rock, the cache is buried (due to the lack of rock ledges in the area) on the right side of the v-shape point. If you look towards the falls from this rock, you will be looking through a cluster of four to five pine trees and the falls are in the distance.

Not the Point

4WD players will get closer than non-4WD players. Nice view of Grant Lake and surrounding mountains.

Coordinates were taken on top of the cache. I wanted to put this out on the point but we ran out of time and couldn't figure out how to get there. This is one of the few caches around the June Lake immediate area and this location specifically would make a neato place to camp or hike. Don't take a very nice car back here - it's dusty and bumpy, although it doesn't need 4WD for most of the trail. This cache is fully accessible in the winter for those of you with a snowcat or snowmobile, a shovel and a lot of time. Otherwise, DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT GOING HERE IN WINTER (or someone may be thawing out your remains in the spring). Nice view and the ammo box should be fairly simple to find. You will have to move a couple of light stones.
The cache contains lots of neato stuff but it's been a week and I can't find our notes. I remember we put a disposable camera in there so make sure you take a picture of yourself! When I find my notes I'll edit this so you know what is there.

This is our first family cache with Lizard Lips. Thanks to him for helping us find this place!

Freebie hint: it's on the other side of the lake from the paved road. It will take you about 10 minutes by dirt road trail to get neat the cache from where your tires leave the pavement.

HINT:

Look for a couple of fairly flat rocks laying over a pretty big crack in a pretty big rock at the end of the road.

Alice & Coon Memorial

At altitude 8,753 feet above sea level. In the 4WD recreation area on the knolls above Mammoth Lakes. This is a great spot to come and take a sunset. This is an off-set cache. You can get the coordinates to the actual cache which lies just .07 away by visiting the coordinates above. Just lift up the WELCOME sign to get the coordinates. Placement of this cache was supervised by Snoogans and the coordinates of the off-set and the cache have been triple checked.

THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE COORDINATES LISTED. THE CACHE IS OFF-SET BY .07.

This cache is dedicated to our two beloved cats Alice and Coon. Alice died at the ripe old age of 20 on June 13, 2003. Coon disappeared on September 23, 2000 at the ripe old age of 18. Coon was probably the victim of a coyote.
Alice is buried about 100 feet from the cache. The view of the town and surrounding mountains is spectacular.

4WD is not always needed. Clearance is probably the only issue. We would suggest either, high clearance vehicles, 4WD, dirt bike or enduro, or just hike it. Bring lots of water. No streams up here.

HINT:

Off-set: Look inside a burned out stump. The cache: white container under a manzanita bush.

Rick's Rocks

This cache is in Alpers Canyon near Rick's Rocks. A popular spot for climbers there is usually at least one car present when the weather is good, so be careful not to give it away. You may have to open & close a fence at certain times of the year. The private property in Alpers is posted at the gates. The gates that are OK are not posted. Pay attention if you come to a closed gate.

This is one of Camel's favorite spots to ride his mountain bike. If you're an experienced rock climber then come for more than just the cache. HAVE FUN!

HINT:

Red Fir, green bush. Look under the bush near the tree.

Prison Pond

Easy hike at first but turns kinda nasty when the trail dissapears and you find yourself wandering the forest.

No fooling around here. Its up at Convict Lake. I can tell you this because knowing that doesnt get you any closer. Not a huge elevation climb at all from the lake just lots of wandering through unmarked forests. This tests your ability to use your GPS as a Geotoy or a Geotool. Watch for Bears and other critters. Pepper spray is not a bad item to put in your bat utility belt for this hike. We did not see any there but they were seen there a few nights before us. Get up there quick!! Once the snow comes I cant imagin you being able to access this one. It should be there come the summer thaw if no one gets there before the snow.
If you get there during the winter you are a true hardcore GEOCACHER.

HHHmmmmmm a clue? Check below. CAUTION !!!! CAUTION!!!! There is some rock hopping involved so be cautious with little kids. Holland is about eight or nine and she did just fine! but do be careful

HINT:

Back side of the lake up the inlet creek. Listen for the roaring sounds. Does it make you have to use the restroom?? CAUTION CAUTION There is some rock hopping with waterfalls involved so be cautious with little kids. Holland is about eight or nine and she did just fine! but do be carefull

Young Zaphod Cache

As the title suggests, there is an easy way and a hard way to this location. Only a topo will show the easy way. Please don't CITO the camo. Replace the cache as found unless it's exposed. I have never seen another person at this location in 7 years, but people do come here often. Lots of cool rocks everywhere if you're a collector. You might even find an arrowhead.

Yes, it's another Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reference, but hey, I'm building a network.

This is Cache #3 in my Offroad Adventure Cache Series. Each cache has a secret code that unlocks the coordinates to the bonus cache. They can all be done in one day (6 caches; 5 + a bonus cache) by an experienced motorcycle rider. Bragging rights is all you will receive, but I will post a leader board on all six pages with your name/team name on it if you can get all 6 in 1 day. Just one catch. You must email me your intent, before you set out to make it all official. The bonus cache will be renamed after you/your team upon completion. Right now it's Ranboze's Mammoth Bonus Cache. To have the cache renamed for your team, you must beat Ranboze's time of 10 hours and 55 minutes. If you take up the challenge, you should start at O'dark thirty for best chance at completion unless you do it as a group and cache several simultaniously.

The cach is nicely stocked with all new stuff:

Log book, pen, and pencil.
An FTF medal.
A small RC car.
A Pacific Styles faux amber necklace.
Sanremo Italian ladies wallet.
A coool Marble (fist sized) paperweight.
Catch a bubble.
Pino Silvestre Extreme Cologne.
A big block of post-its.
A Mammoth Mountain Ski Patch.
A compact screwdriver multi-tool.
A Super Patch bicycle tire repair kit.

AND THE SECRET CODE WRITTEN ON THE LID.

Plan your trades accordingly and post them to keep these caches interesting for others to make the effort.

TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES AS THIS IS AN UNBELIEVABLY SCENIC TOUR. The views are way more valuable than what's in the caches anyway.

HINT:

Hey! Is that a benchmark? Cuz it's not on the list.

Jackass Cache

This cache is an awesome twisty drive to the Jackass Mountain area.

The cache is near Jackass Mountain. To get there will take you an hour from the town of North Fork. It might take longer if you drive sanely...

The cache contains: Compact flourescent light bulb, nylon strap for small gear, a Scoot Quarterly magazine, and some other items. The real treasure is the location.

This is a pretty remote area. Make sure your vehicle is in good condition and has plenty of fuel.
Mammoth Pools is nearby and worth the look if you have time.

HINT:

Lift two stones.

RMEF 2003

Hunting this cache during "snow season" may add to the level of difficulty.

We set this cache on our way home from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) 2003 Elk Camp in Reno. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is an organization that preserves and protects habitats of wildlife so they may continue to flourish. We loaded it up with all kinds of goodies from Elk Camp, including 2 hats that were donated by Brunton, special thanks to Mike Lilygren from Brunton. We met Mike after a seminar on Navigating in the New Millennium (one of the better seminars we attended-Good job!). Other cache items include Smokey The Bear pins, pencils and pencil sharpeners, rulers, miscellaneous pins, Elk Camp Canvas Tote Bag, stickers, magnets, signs, key rings...(too many items to list them all!) We also included 3 travel bugs: Aloha Lizard who is trying to get to Hawaii, the Brass Lock bug by the Boy scouts, and the Walking Shoe travel bug.
Make sure you check out the picture of the original cache contents.

HINT:

It is not at the bottom of the cliff, it's at the top of the Cliff :)

I Love to Hike!

5 mi R/T 1,000' vertical to historic Sheep Camp in beautiful Glass Creek Meadow; take a good half-day for this, and start early if warm. Not accessible in winter; bring sun and bug protection and bird and flower books.

Geo-dashes are fun but I love to hike! This lovely hike starts at an unmarked remote trailhead, approx. 2.7 miles from Highway 395 between Mammoth and June Lake. This area is seldom visited; there are no signs and trails are faint. From Highway 395, at 37 46.401, 119 00 866, turn west onto the road to Hartley Springs Campground. Go about a mile; turn-off to Hartley Springs is right but you go left toward Obsidian Dome and Upper Glass Creek. Keep on the main road - Obsidian Dome (the "glass" is obsidian) is on your left; at about 2.5 miles from 395, keep right at a fork and park at a primitive campsite at 37 44.862, 119 01.415. Go down to the creek and follow the fisherperson's trail on the north side of the creek. After a steep half mile, you will traverse fairly level pumice fields and forests (great views of White Wing Peak to the south and the San Joaquin Ridge to the west), to the meadow. No trail from here on, so stay on the north side for about 1/2 mile to "Sheep Camp", a historic Native American and pioneer location with a watering trough and an obvious campsite. Clear water at the pipe spring just beyond the camp. If the cache disappears, email me the location (city) where the trough was made for a find! But do look for the cache - a small decon container in a no-doubt-historic rusty tin can!

HINT:

From the trough, go about 200' north to 2 large fallen lodgepole pines lying next to each other; the one on the left is leaning onto an old 3' stump. Check the obvious geocache location.

Skelton Puzzle

The Skelton Puzzle Cache is a 2.5 mile moderate hike from the Cold Water Campground parking lot in Mammoth Lakes California. The cache is approximately 125 feet off the trail.

The theme of the Cache is "Take a Puzzle, Trade a Puzzle, Try a Puzzle."

The four of us (Cal Poly Pomona Graduates) hid the cache near one of our favorite lakes. We have been coming up here for 12 years and we always make it a point to hike up to Skelton Lake. Bring a lunch and some bug repellent and enjoy an afternoon in the mammoth mountains.
The Skelton Puzzle cache is about exchanging puzzles. Other items are included in the cache however puzzle exchanges are recommended. Wood puzzles, metal puzzles and books with logic puzzles are the theme of this cache.

The cache has been recently replaced. It started out with:

Barrel Puzzle
Quad cube puzzle
Wood Disentanglement puzzle
Dinosaur Egg Puzzle
10 Dexterity Puzzle
8 Metal Disentanglement puzzles
This cache is just a quarter mile from the Creag An Turic coin exchange. Creag An Turic is a much more difficult cache and is not recommended for children.

HINT:

Under a fallen tree surrounded by rocks. The cache is easily spotted when you are near it.

Deer Rock

This cache is located in the Mammoth Lakes area. Please note the terrain rating is slightly elevated. This is due to the area in which the cache resides. Please be careful for LOOSE ROCKS as we noticed some when we were leaving.

After a day of fishing we came across a deer on top of this rock, hence we named it Deer Rock.

Contents:
2 Pens
1 Hacky Sack
1 Yo Yo
1 Hot Wheel
1 Log Book

Please note you should wear long pants and no sandles.

Golgafrincham B Ark

If you have read Douglas Adams' books then you will understand the title better when you get there. Probably the easiest location on the tour. Beware of muggles on this one too. It will most likely be deserted though. This spot needs more CITO than I could provide. That's why I picked it. Be certain not to leave the cache exposed in any way or it will surely disappear.

Hardcore Ezakimak

Above 10,250 feet. This road is called Hardcore for a reason. It takes elevation with hardly a switchback. I do it on a Honda 600R with no trouble at all. Otherwise, it's 4WD, high clearance, a killer bike ride, or hoof the 3 miles to the top. All the way to the end and downslope to the left is where you will find the cache. There are other caches on the road to make it worth the trip. Beware of Muggles even here. This is a popular spot.

What the heck does Ezakimak mean anyway? It's Kamikaze spelled backwords. If you are a mountain biker then you know what I'm referring to. This is one bike ride you would never catch me doing. Not when I know that I could be at the top in 10 minutes on a motorcycle.

In Alpers canyon at the very end of the left fork in the road. There are some modern ruins there and I surely would like to know what they were. Only the foundations remain.
